Not every problem needs a machine learning model. That sounds obvious, but it's the kind of thing that gets lost in the hype. After years of building fullstack applications, I've seen the same pattern play out with every new technology: people reach for the shiny tool before asking whether it fits the problem. AI is no different.

I just finished the "Exploring Artificial Intelligence Use Cases and Applications" course as part of my AWS AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) study plan. Here's what stood out, organized around the concepts that matter most for developers thinking about where AI actually belongs in their stack.

When ML Makes Sense (and When It Doesn't)

This is the most important section of the entire course, and it's deceptively simple.

Machine learning is the right choice when rule-based coding becomes too complex. Think about spam filtering. You could write if/else rules for a while, but the moment you have hundreds of overlapping variables (sender reputation, keyword frequency, link patterns, user behavior), manual rules fall apart. ML learns those patterns from data instead.

ML also makes sense when you need to scale. A human can classify a few hundred emails. Millions? That's where models earn their place.

The flip side is just as important. If you can solve the problem with a straightforward calculation, a lookup table, or a deterministic workflow, skip ML entirely. As a fullstack developer, I think of it this way: you wouldn't spin up a Kubernetes cluster to serve a static landing page. Same logic applies here. Match the tool to the problem.

Three ML Techniques, Three Problem Types

The course breaks machine learning into three core techniques. For the AIF-C01 exam, you need to know which technique maps to which problem type.

Supervised learning works with labeled data. You give the model input-output pairs and it learns to predict outputs for new inputs. This splits into two flavors: classification (assigning categories, like fraud detection or medical diagnostics) and regression (predicting continuous values, like weather forecasting or market trends). If you have labeled training data and a prediction task, supervised learning is your starting point.

Unsupervised learning works without labels. The model discovers hidden structures on its own. The main techniques here are clustering (grouping similar data points, like customer segmentation) and dimensionality reduction (simplifying datasets while preserving patterns). This is useful when you don't know what you're looking for yet. You're exploring, not predicting.

Reinforcement learning is the trial-and-error approach. The system interacts with an environment, takes actions, and receives rewards or penalties. Over time it optimizes its decision-making. Robotics and game-playing AI are the classic examples. If your problem involves sequential decisions in a dynamic environment, reinforcement learning fits.

Core AI Application Types

The course covers four application categories that keep showing up across industries.

Computer vision lets machines interpret images and video. Image classification, object detection, and segmentation are the key tasks. Real-world applications range from autonomous driving to medical imaging to home security systems.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) handles human language. Text classification, sentiment analysis, translation, and language generation are the main capabilities. Insurance companies use it to extract policy details. Telecom companies analyze customer messages to suggest personalized offers.

Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) extracts and classifies information from unstructured data. Financial services use it to speed up mortgage processing. Legal teams automate contract handling.

Fraud detection identifies suspicious patterns in transactions and system activity. Financial services, retail, and telecom all rely on it. The models learn what "normal" looks like and flag deviations.

Generative AI: Capabilities and Challenges

Generative AI is a subset of deep learning. Its defining feature is that it creates new content (text, images, code, music) based on patterns learned from training data. This is the shift from AI as an analysis tool to AI as a creation tool.

The course lists seven key capabilities: adaptability across domains, real-time responsiveness, simplicity in automating content creation, creativity and exploration, data efficiency (some models work with limited datasets), personalization, and scalability.

But every capability comes with a challenge, and this is where the exam gets specific.

Hallucinations are the most discussed. The model generates information that sounds correct but is fabricated. Mitigation: verify outputs with independent sources.

Nondeterminism means the same input can produce different outputs across runs. Mitigation: repeated testing to identify inconsistencies.

Toxicity is the risk of generating offensive or harmful content. Mitigation: curate training data and use guardrail models to filter outputs.

Regulatory violations happen when models expose sensitive data like PII. Mitigation: anonymization, privacy-preserving techniques, and audits of training data.

For the exam, learn the challenge-mitigation pairs. They're high-value questions.

Choosing a Generative AI Model

There's no universal "best model." Selection depends on five factors: model type (text, image, multimodal), performance requirements (speed vs. depth), capabilities (summarization, classification, code gen), constraints (compute, data quality, ethics), and compliance (privacy laws, industry regulations).

The course highlights several models available through Amazon Bedrock: AI21 Labs' Jurassic-2 for text generation, Amazon Titan for summarization and embeddings, Anthropic's Claude for content generation and code, and Stability AI's Stable Diffusion for image generation. Each has a different sweet spot.

Business Metrics That Matter

AI without measurable business impact is just a demo. The course identifies five key metrics: user satisfaction, Average Revenue per User (ARPU), cross-domain performance, conversion rate, and efficiency. These metrics connect the technical work to business outcomes.

Takeaways

First, always ask whether ML is the right tool before reaching for it. Simple problems deserve simple solutions.

Second, know the three ML techniques cold. Supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning each solve a different class of problem.

Third, generative AI's challenges are just as important as its capabilities. Hallucinations, nondeterminism, toxicity, privacy risks. These aren't edge cases. They're the baseline reality of working with these models, and managing them is part of the job.
