01 / THE CONTEXT

The challenge.

An academic research team used an open-source platform to coordinate researchers, recruit participants, schedule and run experiments, and collect the resulting data.

02 / ENGAGEMENT FOCUS

Where the work focused.

The brief requested maintenance, new features, custom components, documentation, integrations with other teams' tools, and dependency updates. The platform connected microtasks and voting with participant and experiment workflows.

MUI: make complex research screens consistent

Forms, dialogs, and repeated controls benefit from a shared component system. MUI provides those building blocks, leaving more attention for participant, scheduling, and experiment workflows.

The trade-off: Shared components still need careful labels, keyboard behavior, and product-specific interaction design.

Firebase: connect screens to dependable data rules

Participant and experiment workflows depend on consistent data access. I treat permissions, validation, and state transitions as part of the feature, alongside what appears on screen.

The trade-off: A managed backend reduces infrastructure work, but the application still needs deliberate access rules and failure handling.
